Kurt RevelsOwner

Kurt is retired from the Coast Guard where he served 23 years performing the duties of a Helicopter Rescue Swimmer. While training for his second Ironman race, he decided he needed something a little more than the usual training. He found CrossFit in March of 2010 and hasn’t looked back since. He started coaching CrossFit in 2012 and just moved on from there.

Kurt has brought his expansive knowledge base to the realm of coaching and personal training. His background allows him to work and understand diverse populations, youth and seasoned individuals, novice, and advance, as well as competitive and noncompetitive athletes.

Laura Revels
Laura RevelsOwner

Being married to a retired Coast Guard Rescue Swimmer and two-time IRONMAN finisher definitely sets the bar high for Laura. Laura participated in several sports at a young age. She played basketball and ran track in High School. She was a typical, full-time treadmill runner prior to sipping the CrossFit kool-aid.

Kurt started CrossFit before Laura and he convinced her to try it back in 2010. Participating in CrossFit has convinced her there is nothing more rewarding than getting stronger both mentally and physically. You continually learn to stretch your comfort zone and conquer your fears. The community is the key behind it all. There is nothing like the friendships and bonds you make with the people you work hard and sweat with! She is a full time working mother and makes time for it all. (#noexcuses) She completely shares her husband’s passion and enthusiasm to spread the CrossFit “cheer”. She is always ready to help others achieve their goals and set their bars high as well.

Keri Smith
Keri Smith

Keri grew up active and playing sports in school. She was a varsity high school fencer and helped coach and train beginner fencers. After graduating and starting a career as a Police Officer, Keri looked for something to get her into shape and perform well with her daily duties in law enforcement.

Keri found CrossFit at the end of 2011 and has not looked back. Keri received her CrossFit L1 certificate in 2013 and joined the CrossFit Vertigo team that same year. Keri enjoys coaching and pushing others past their perceived limitations. The biggest thing Keri enjoys being part of is witnessing fellow Crossfitters achieve goals they thought were far out of reach.

John Powe
John Powe

Getting active, exercising and overall fitness has always been a part of the foundation of John’s life. Growing up with siblings, many of his earliest memories are of being engaged in some type of physical competition with his brother’s or his sister. He played competitive sports (mainly soccer and football) all throughout grade school.

Shortly after graduating from high school, he stepped up to his ultimate challenge and joined the Marine Corps where served as a machine gunner in an infantry unit. Upon leaving the military to finish college and start a civilian career, John missed the rigorous physical demands, mostly-friendly competition, and camaraderie which he later found in CrossFit, thanks to his brother Mike. John has been a member at CrossFit Vertigo since February 2014 and received his Level 1 CrossFit training certificate in May 2016. He has competed in three CrossFit competitions and placed in the most recent of the three, along with Owner, Kurt Revels, and Genevive, a fellow member. John loves calling CrossFit Vertigo home not just because of what it has to offer in the way of physical benefits and results, which are plenty (he lost close to 40 pounds between March and December 2015), but because the Coaches and fellow members are practically family to him. John strives to get better every day he steps inside the gym and to constantly expand the borders of his comfort zones. As is written on one of the walls inside the gym, “If it doesn’t challenge you, it doesn’t change you!”
